Science to Street Art – Open Call for Mural Artists

Inspired by science and discovery? Apply to have your artwork featured in the Discovery Building on the UW-Madison campus, a prominent location that welcomes more than 700,000 visitors per year. In an initiative through UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID), a mural will be created to feature innovative science, focusing on the past, present and future contributions of Wisconsin’s diverse communities and individuals to advancing science and technology.

Science to Street Art murals demonstrate a variety of ways that creative placemaking and public art can be crafted to amplify science and educational resources within the City of Madison. The murals provide non-traditional avenues for science literacy through the fusion of science and art.  The current opportunity is the result of a partnership between the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID), the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and the Morgridge Institute for Research in the Discovery Building.

Through this call for artists, a review panel made up of UW-Madison researchers, artists, and community stakeholders will select a local artist or group of artists. The selected artist will collaborate with the review panel to finalize the mural concept (Dimensions: 13.5’ L x 48.5” W ).  Scientists will be available to offer their subject matter expertise.

The selected artist or artist team will receive an $18,000 stipend. All expenses, including materials, insurance, maintenance, signage, and printing must be paid for by the artist from the stipend. Funding for the artwork comes from a grant from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.

Emerging and established Wisconsin artists are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Artists will be selected based on the quality of artwork/artistic excellence, creativity, originality, and technical skill. We aim to select a dynamic artist or artist group whose work may encompass a broad range of art styles while representing the diversity of our scientific community.

Please note: applicants must be available April 2022 through June 15, 2022 for workshop attendance and mural creation and completion.
